- Horror games have been on a roll this year, generating a huge $1.3 billion on Steam.

- The top 3 highest-grossing franchises were Resident Evil, Outlast, and Silent Hill.
The horror genre has absolutely exploded in the last couple of years. It was already quite popular, but this year we saw a huge influx of players and some outstanding releases like Resident Evil Requiem, and older ones continuing to sell well.
Horror games generated a whopping $1.3 billion in 2026 on Steam, led by around $211 million from Resident Evil Requiem. That’s up 17% from last year, 4x higher than 2019, and we still have two full months to go.
Why it matters: It is really refreshing to see how the genre has found a new life after the highs of classic franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, which to date continue to sell well while garnering so much praise.

Alinea Analytics has dropped a detailed horror genre report to celebrate Halloween, revealing what a great year it has been. Requiem is leading the list; around 16% of the total revenue came from the title.
Outlast Trials is second on the list with $62.1 million, and Resident Evil 4 Remake is third with $50.4 million. Overall, the Resident Evil franchise accounts for a massive 32% share, while Outlast and Silent Hill are runners-up.

This isn’t over for the genre either, since next year is shaping up to be equally massive, with Silent Hill 1 Remake heavily rumored and Resident Evil Veronica already confirmed as two of the flagship releases of 2027.
