Death Stranding 2: Kojima Aims To Create Something New Not To Appeal To The Mass Market

Expert Verified By

"I’m not interested in making something that appeals to everyone"

Story Highlight
  • Death Stranding 2 is currently being tested by various people, and the reviews seem tos be very positive.
  • However, Kojima doesn’t like that it has no controversy because he doesn’t want to appeal to everyone.
  • Kojima has no interest in selling millions of copies; he just want to make something that doesn’t already exist.

Death Stranding 2 is among the most wanted games mainly because of who is at the helm of its development. Hideo Kojima is a well-known, legendary figure in the gaming industry, and the fandom is convinced that he can’t go wrong with a video game.

After leaving Konami, he released his own game, Death Stranding, which a massive fandom finds appealing. However, it seems like Kojima’s aim isn’t to appeal to the mass market, instead, he just wants to make a game that is different and doesn’t exist in the world

Why it matters: Nowadays, most of the developers\publishers aim to sell as many copies of a game as possible by adding features that may not be necessary. Two such examples are the open-world and soulslike formulas.

Death Stranding 2 Test Reviews Are Highly Positive, But That Isn’t What Kojima Wants

Speaking in the recent Edge Magazine issue, Hideo Kojima revealed several new details about his upcoming game. Kojima said that he doesn’t like it when his game is liked by everyone. He said in the issue that if 4 out of 10 people are satisfied with his and the others think it’s terrible, then he is happy with that

He further clarified this with an example. Kojima said, “Blockbuster films need an 80 percent approval rating,” and he doesn’t want his games to be like that. In short, he wants to make a game that only a limited number of people would like.

I’m not interested in appealing to the mass market, or selling millions of copies… That’s not what I’m aiming for. I don’t want to simply recreate something that’s already in the world. I want to make something new.

-Hideo Kojima

Kojima is one of the few legendary people in the industry for a reason. He doesn’t chase success; Kojima just makes a video game that he believes in and that always works out for him.

The reviews of Death Stranding 2 so far are so positive that Kojima is saying there should be some controversies. That is how you know it is going to be a quality release
