The Company Thought The Game Was Boring And Uninteresting.

Story Highlight
  • Pragmata’s early build was hated so much by Capcom that it almost cancelled the game.
  • The company thought the game was boring and not compelling.
  • However, the team finally perfected the hacking system, which was a big hit at the company.

In an industry filled with sequels and remakes, it’s rare to see a major publisher take a chance on a new IP. However, Capcom broke that tradition in 2026 by launching Pragmata, a game developed primarily by the company’s younger developers.

The title has turned out to be an overwhelming success for the Japanese publisher, selling over 2 million copies in under a month and garnering critical acclaim. But, as it turns out, the beloved adventure game almost didn’t see the light of day.

Why it matters: It’s rare to see the big game developers take such a risk with new IP’s. Hence, Capcom deserves plaudits for giving time to developers making Pragmata.

In a YouTube livestream celebrating the game’s success, key Pragmata developers revealed that the title was almost cancelled because Capcom hated the early build. The prototype levels were heavily criticised, with the company telling developers that the puzzles and action were not compelling.

Give me back the 2 months I lost working alongside the team. Is this what you’re trying to entertain your players with?

-Comments From Capcom

Capcom even went on to say that the Pragmata team was incompetent at level design and that the team delayed the project in 2021. When the young developers finally came up with the hacking system, it didn’t pass the internal review, as Capcom thought the game had gotten worse and wouldn’t entertain players.

As a result, the team had to strike the right balance between the puzzles and combat for a final presentation that would decide the fate of Pragmata, as Capcom was close to cancelling the title. Fortunately, the revised build with the new hacking system was a big hit within the company, earning positive reviews from leadership.

Capcom Pragmata
Pragmata has turned out to be a massive success for Capcom.

Considering how Pragmata is set to spawn a franchise with a sequel in the works, Capcom should get plaudits for not cancelling the title and for giving time to the young development team in the modern gaming industry.

Will you play a sequel to Pragmata? What changes do you think the developers should make to a potential sequel? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
