The Studio Was On The Verge Of Collapse Even Before The Acquisition!

Story Highlight
  • An ex-Bungie employee says the studio was below the red line before the acquisition.
  • The deal with Sony might have saved the studio from a complete shutdown.
  • Many believed that the problems started when Sony acquired them in 2022.

It is widely believed that Bungie Entertainment‘s downfall started when Sony took over the company. While yes, the troubles have been persisting since then, the state of the studio was actually already deteriorating before the deal happened.

Sony actually might have saved the studio, as according to a former community lead, Bungie Entertainment was on the brink of collapse before it was acquired. The acquisition helped put the studio back on its feet.

Why it matters: Since Sony’s takeover, there have been reports of creativity differences, a toxic work environment, and more, but in reality, it was an already broken mirror, and more cracks have appeared eventually.

Bungie Closure
Sony’s acquisition of Bungie might have actually saved the studio from getting shut down

Ex-community lead, Liana Ruppert, took to X to claim that Bungie was below the red line before the deal, and if Sony hadn’t acquired them back then, it would’ve resulted in studio closure or at least the end of Destiny.

The studio, of course, was then helped by Sony with budgets to develop its IPs further, and has been afloat since then, although it hasn’t been delivering. It recorded an impairment loss of over $565 million in the last fiscal year.

The studio hasn’t been doing too well for the longest time

Reports also suggest that the gaming giants consider the acquisition a mistake now. Things have worsened even more since Destiny 2 was recently shut down, and their current project, Marathon, isn’t doing well either.
