No Assassin’s Creed 1 Remake Is In The Works Despite Black Flag Resynced’s Success

The Door On More Remakes, However, Is Not Closed.

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft has confirmed that it isn’t pursuing any more Assassin’s Creed remakes at the moment.
  • The publisher squashed all rumors regarding a remake of the original being in development.
  • However, the gaming giant assured fans it will continue exploring options to remake older titles.

This decade has been full of ups and downs for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The middling reaction to Shadows and its underwhelming commercial performance did little to help the IP’s already dwindling reputation. However, the success of Black Flag Resynced has infused new life into the series.

The remake became the highest-rated entry in the series on Metacritic based on user scores, and also went on to sell a whopping 2 million copies in just 24 hours. But despite such incredible success, Ubisoft is surprisingly not working on any remakes.

Why it matters: Not actively pursuing remakes for a franchise that is currently struggling to get consistent hits is terrible management on Ubisoft’s end.

In a new blog post updating on the IP’s status, Ubisoft revealed that it currently has no Assassin’s Creed remakes in development. The publisher outright denied rumors that a remake of Assassin’s Creed 1 is in production, saying it has other projects in the works, including ones fans haven’t heard about yet.

Ubisoft stated, however, that the door is not closed and it will continue to explore more options to remake the classics. Instead of pursuing remakes, the gaming giant is currently developing a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed title that is deep in development and has already had one round of playtests.

In addition, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is also in production, and more info about the next mainline entry will be revealed in 2027. Even though the initiative to pursue new creative avenues is commendable, not pursuing another remake is surprising considering how Black Flag Resycned reached its annual sales target in two weeks.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
Black Flag Resynced turned out to be a commercial and critical success for Ubisoft.

The remake outsold Assassin’s Creed Shadows by 2x at launch, despite the latter being the latest mainline entry. Hence, with Ubisoft even admitting remakes have the potential to earn more profit, the decision to not pursue more remakes immediately is questionable.
