GTA 6 Had No Positive Impact On The Sales Of Xbox Series Consoles, Says Analyst

The Console Actually Saw A Decline In Sales Last Month.

Story Highlight
  • According to Mat Piscatella, GTA 6 has had no positive impact on Xbox Series sales so far.
  • The console actually saw unit sales decline in September, down 27% from last year.
  • On the other hand, PS5 saw a massive uptick in sales and revenue, partially thanks to the Rockstar game.

With less than a month left until launch, GTA 6 is the only thing under discussion in the gaming world. The title has already hit 6 million sales and is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases in history, recouping its expensive budget in a matter of days.

As GTA 6 is exclusively launching on consoles, current-gen hardware has seen an uptick in sales, with PS5 seeing a massive surge in unit sales this September compared to 2025. However, despite the positive impact on Sony hardware, Xbox has somehow not been influenced by the hype surrounding GTA 6.

Why it matters: If the most anticipated gaming project in history can’t move Xbox consoles, then the current-gen might be a lost cause at this point in history.

GTA 6
Unlike the PS5, current-gen Xbox hardware hasn’t been positively impacted by GTA 6.

In a new interview with GamesBeat, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella stated that GTA 6 has had no impact on Xbox Series X|S sales. Unlike the PS5, which saw a 43% increase in revenue last month in the US, the Microsoft hardware recorded its lowest September in history despite GTA 6 being right around the corner.

It was the lowest September ever for Xbox, 27% below last year in units. So there was no impact of the GTA VI reveal on Xbox, or no noticeable positive impact, at least.

Compared to last September, Xbox Series consoles actually declined in unit sales, selling 27% less hardware year-on-year. Hence, the analyst believes GTA 6 had no positive impact on Xbox hardware, with the console continuing its downward spiral despite being one of the only two options to play the title.

With Microsoft ramping up the production of Xbox Series consoles in anticipation of the Rockstar game’s launch, this is certainly a disappointment for Team Green. However, considering how the GTA pre-order split favored the PS5 six-to-one, these sales figures aren’t that surprising.

GTA 6 Pre-Orders Featured
The game’s pre-orders heavily favored the PS5 in the sales split.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick did promise that the open-world title would boost the overall sales of current-gen consoles, but so far that only stands true for Sony hardware. With months still remaining before GTA 6 comes out on PC, however, there is a high chance Xbox Series X|S sales will pick up later on.

Do you think GTA 6 is going to eventually end up boosting Xbox sales? Is the console a hopeless case this late into the generation? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
