- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a big return to form for the franchise after years.
- It has an 84 on Metacritic, with most reviews praising it for the campaign and DMZ.
- There are still some shortcomings, but they can be ignored or fixed through updates.
The Call of Duty franchise has been a letdown in recent years. Despite being developed by multiple studios, it never felt fresh, with repetitive ideas and boring campaigns, but this year things have drastically changed.
Modern Warfare 4 reviews are in, and it sits at a respectable 84 on Metacritic. The critics praise it for brilliant visuals, a great campaign, and the DMZ mode. Multiplayer is the only thing that needs a bit more work.
Why it matters: There are some misfires, yes, but this is indeed a return to form for the Call of Duty franchise, especially after how badly it struggled last year with Black Ops 6, when it was up against Battlefield 6.

The Metacritic score for Modern Warfare 4, as stated earlier, is 84, and here are the scores from some prominent media outlets:
- Destrutoid – 9/10
- DayOne – 9/10
- Game Informer – 8.5/10
- Guardians – 8/10
- Gamingbolt – 8/10
- IGN – 8/10
- GameSpot – 8/10
Overall, the reception is widely positive, and the campaign is the biggest standout. Fans and critics have even called it the best in many years, with a much deeper, darker, and emotional storyline for its iconic characters.

DMZ is one of the most fan-favorite Call of Duty modes, and it’s been executed really well with the new release. It’s engaging and just the right amount of chaotic that it keeps you going for hours and hours.
Multiplayer is also pretty good, but it is slower-paced compared to Black Ops 7, so you have to get used to it. It also can feel a little bleak at times, but the foundation is solid, and a few updates can sort everything out.
