- A former producer on the original Gears of War has criticized E-Day’s character focus.
- The criticism centers on Marcus and Dom being pushed aside for Mags Carter.
- Gears of War: E-Day is built around the franchise’s earliest events, so this discussion is certainly interesting.
Gears of War: E-Day was a breath of fresh air for Xbox, becoming one of its best-rated first-party releases in years.
The title may not have sold too well, but many were quick to dub it a return to form for the series. However, one former Gears of War producer has criticized E-Day for failing to give Marcus and Dom more time in the spotlight.
Why it matters: Gears of War: E-Day was sold on the promise of returning to the series’ roots, bringing old characters to the forefront as part of the story of Emergence Day.
A former producer tied to the original Gears of War has criticized Gears of War: E-Day, arguing that the upcoming entry sidelines Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in favor of Mags Carter.
The ex-producer took issue with how the game failed to provide a satisfying origin story for Marcus and Dom and their brotherhood, putting way too much emphasis on background characters like Mags Carter.
She also praised parts of the game related to the core gameplay. However, according to Laura Fryer, E-Day fails to reach its target audience, which wanted to see the brotherhood of the original Gears of War story.

Of course, E-Day’s new characters have proven to be divisive, leading to all sorts of discussions online. Many still feel the game does a decent job with its classic cast of characters, while others think The Coalition should have given Dom and Marcus more time in the limelight.
