Story Highlight
  • S-Game CEO says Phantom Blade is a high-budget game with the spirit of an indie game.
  • They had to develop everything from scratch and weren’t afraid to take any risks.
  • This is the studio’s first AAA PC game, transitioning over from mostly mobile games.

Phantom Blade Zero is truly looking like it will be one of the best games of 2026. Its recent previews were glowing, calling it one of the most solid contenders for this year’s GOTY award, and it is poised to be as successful as Black Myth.

S-Game says that they developed Phantom Blade with a AAA budget, but the title retains the spirit of an indie game. For context, this is the Chinese’s studio’s first major PC game, after working on mobile titles for years.

Why it matters: Since the title takes a unique and stylish new approach to action games, it is filled with creativity from developers brimming with talent, which is more like an indie, as AAA studios usually prefer playing it safe.

Phantom Blade Zero studio head says it’s a high-budget game with an indie spirit

Soulframe, S-Game CEO, says that Phantom Blade Zero might have a high AAA game budget, but essentially they’ve treated it like another indie project. He believes that spirit is what brought the game to life.

Looking purely at scale, it’s hard to call it an indie game. It’s a project with a pretty large budget. However, in spirit, I consider it an indie game.

The studio wasn’t scared of doing things outside set boundaries despite a bigger budget

The CEO stated that since they didn’t have any AAA experience, they had to recruit young developers and entrusted them with crucial tasks like the boss fights, opening sequence, and more, despite no prior experience.

But he believes that rawness was the essence; they were able to create such an epic experience. This allowed them to take risks and step beyond the set boundaries, and that is how S-Game created the action game.
