Former Naughty Dog Dev Misses Short Games Like Uncharted 1-3!

Story Highlight
  • A former Naughty Dog developer says the idea of massive games like GTA 6 and The Elder Scrolls 6 can feel intimidating.
  • He misses the era of short games that used to be 6 to 8 hours long.
  • The developer still hopes GTA 6 and The Elder Scrolls 6 perform well, but he doesn’t find their lengthy nature appealing.

Modern games are considerably longer than titles from a few years ago, but not everyone likes that this is the case.

Recently, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden commented on how he thinks games should be shorter. A former Naughty Dog developer has also shared his two cents on the matter, noting that games like GTA 6 can sometimes feel intimidating due to the sheer amount of content present in them.

Why it matters: Many gamers believe modern AAA releases should be lengthy due to how much they cost. On the other hand, others believe in the quality over quantity approach.

Ex-Naughty Dog developer Matt Radford recently highlighted his thoughts on shorter games.

He pointed out that titles like The Elder Scrolls 6 and GTA 6 aren’t as appealing to him as shorter, more focused titles. The developer makes this argument because players sometimes don’t have enough time to play through such titles.

Note that GTA 6 is said to offer 80 hours of content through the story mode alone. Similarly, The Elder Scrolls 6 will certainly be hundreds of hours long. Matt Radford believes that shorter games, like the original Uncharted trilogy, are more exciting.

I think there’s something intimidating to me about a GTA 6 or another Elder Scrolls. I am looking for shorter experiences that are really focused.

The Uncharted Trilogy Was Not As Long As Modern Action Games

The former Naughty Dog developer even found a game like The Last of Us Part 2 a bit too lengthy for his liking. He argues that 6 to 8 hours is the sweet spot for focused games that constantly remain exciting.

What do you think of the developer’s outlook on shorter titles? Do you agree?
