- Hideo Kojima will develop Physint on a lower budget with Xbox than what he initially demanded from Sony.
- The amount Kojima required from PlayStation was “significant.”
- The developer has also announced plans to turn the IP into movies and anime in collaboration with Xbox.
After a series of questionable decisions in the past few months, cancelling Hideo Kojima’s Physint has cost Sony a considerable amount of grace with the fans. The Japanese giant’s eternal rival, Xbox, swooped in to save the legendary developer’s game.
Hence, while Xbox has been enjoying the renewed vigor around its brand thanks to Asha Sharma’s leadership, PlayStation has been facing intense scrutiny from fans for cancelling Physint in favour of more live-service titles. As it turns out, Hideo Kojima might have agreed to a smaller development budget in the publishing deal with Xbox.
Why it matters: Making the game on a lower budget suggests that there were other contributing factors to the end of Kojima and Sony’s long-term relationship.
In a new video, Jason Schreier revealed that Hideo Kojima agreed to develop Physint on a lower budget with Xbox, compared to what he was asking PlayStation. The insider didn’t reveal the exact development budget Kojima floated to Sony, but the sum was very “significant.”
Xbox paid less than Kojima had been asking PlayStation for at the end of the day.
According to Schreier, the amount Xbox agreed upon in its partnership with Kojima Productions was less than what the studio wanted from Sony at the end of negotiations. Hence, the departure of key figures like Jim Ryan, who agreed to the Death Stranding 2 deal with Kojima, also contributed to PlayStation cancelling Physint, and it wasn’t just the budget.
Different reports have come up with a variety of reasons the partnership between Sony and Kojima ended, with one insider saying that the studio wasn’t meeting internal deadlines that PlayStation had set. On the other hand, some believe the commercial performance of Death Stranding 2 spooked the Japanese giant enough to discard Physint.

Regardless, the game has survived its initial cancellation, and Hideo Kojima has announced plans to turn the IP into movies, anime, and much more in collaboration with Xbox.
