Sony Drops New Footage Of Live Service Fairgames Right After Cancelling Physint

New Playtests For The Extraction Shooter Have Also Been Announced.

Story Highlight
  • Sony’s upcoming live-service title Fairgames has debuted new footage, announcing a new playtest.
  • This news comes hours after Sony cancelled Physint, breaking its partnership with Kojima.
  • Fairgames has also had a troubled production, with developers failing to find the fun in the extraction shooter.

Sony has had a difficult few months on the PR front, with the Japanese giant repeatedly feeling the wrath of gamers for some questionable moves. From the decision to stop disc production to declaring that consumers don’t deserve tariff refunds, the company is fighting one battle after another.

Now, Sony is once again facing the heat from the gaming community for canning Hideo Kojima’s Physint. As it turns out, the Japanese giant is still insistent on its live-service titles despite dropping the much-anticipated single-player game.

Why it matters: Sony deciding to develop another live-service game instead of a genre-breaking project from a legendary developer is certainly a choice that should be frowned upon.

Despite shutting down the production of Kojima’s Physint, Sony has announced new playtests for its live-service title Fairgames while dropping new gameplay footage. The Haven Studios project debuted a 2-minute trailer on Player.gg under the codename Project Espresso, showcasing its simple extraction shooter premise.

The closed playtest announcement comes less than a day after Sony officially revealed it had decided to halt the production of Hideo Kojima’s Physint, with Xbox swooping in to save the legendary game developer. The timing makes the company’s decision even more concerning, considering how Fairgames has had a troubled production so far, with developers failing to find the “fun” in the title.

Hence, going through with the launch of Fairgames while breaking a fruitful partnership with Kojima has certainly done Sony no favors in trying to improve its relationship with the fanbase.

Farigames Extraction Shooter
Sony’s previous extraction shooter, Marathon, is struggling to become the success the company thought it would be.

Considering how the gaming behemoth has only debuted 4 IPs this generation, with its previous extraction shooter underwhelming the majority, the life cycle of Fairgames is already under threat even before launch.

Do you think Fairgames will survive longer than other shooting games like Concord? Do you think Sony made the right decision to go through with its production while cancelling the new Metal Gear Solid from Kojima? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
