Console prices have been on an incline for a while now, with giants like Xbox and PlayStation increasing hardware costs multiple times since the start of last year. The memory crisis, coupled with a variety of geopolitical issues, has severely curtailed the purchasing power of consumers worldwide.
One of the primary factors that started the trend of expensive consoles was the US tariffs, which reportedly cost Sony $680 million in revenue. However, now that the company has received a refund for the illegal tariffs, consumers still won’t be getting a penny from that money.
Why it matters: Despite being paid twice for the tariffs, once by consumers and then by the US government, Sony is withholding the refund from players by playing anti-consumer cards.
In a legal response, Sony said it won’t give any portion of the tariff refund to consumers, stating that players made their own decision to purchase a PS5 console. The Japanese giant called this claim by fans illogical, declaring that consumers can’t prove tariffs were the main reason behind the price hikes in a motion filed in California’s Northern District.
Sony’s lawyers argued that paying a fair market price for a voluntarily purchased item isn’t legally recognised as an injury to consumers; hence, the company isn’t obliged to pass on the $500 million refund to players.
Ever since the US tariffs imposed in early 2025 were declared illegal this February, gamers have been asking gaming giants like Nintendo, Sony, and Xbox for a portion of the refunds, as the companies essentially got paid twice. A lawsuit similar to Sony’s was filed against Nintendo, with consumers demanding reimbursement for the hiked prices.
However, the other two console makers have also stuck to a similar argument, emphasizing that gamers themselves decided to pay the market price for the console. Judges are yet to decide on any of these lawsuits, so only time will tell who wins this battle
