September 12 officially marks Steam’s 23rd anniversary. Many users who have been with the platform from the beginning have marked this occasion by celebrating anniversaries of their respective accounts.

This milestone also marks a great opportunity to look back upon Valve’s journey so far. Steam launched in 2003 as Valve’s way to handle digital distribution, but many PC players were used to discs and standalone installers at the time.

A mandatory online launcher felt restrictive to many, and the situation became even more intense around Half-Life 2, which required Steam activation. Of course, Valve continued to expand and eventually became ingrained in every part of PC gaming.

Today, Steam makes billions of dollars each year, thanks to support from practically all publishers and studios.

The Steam Machine Launched Recently

Valve has also expanded beyond Steam in the years since 2023. Most recently, the gaming giant launched the Steam Machine, though the console was held back by price hikes.

Valve’s venture into handheld gaming with the Steam Deck was also interesting, but ultimately, Steam itself remains Valve’s magnum opus.
