Steam Boasts Over 200 Million Monthly Active Users, Over 50% Larger Than PlayStation

Steam Is Dominating The Gaming Ecosystem!

Story Highlight
  • Steam reportedly has over 200 million monthly active users, according to two separate estimates by GameDiscoverCo.
  • This figure is more than 50% higher than PlayStation’s officially reported 125 million monthly active users this year.
  • Valve’s store will grow further as more console users shift to PC over ongoing Xbox and PlayStation controversies.

Steam has grown at a constant pace in the PC space, while console ecosystems have struggled to catch up over the years. This dominance has only been possible because Steam boasts the best game offerings and customer support, instead of catering to shareholders.

A new report now shows Steam has reportedly crossed over 200 million monthly active users. In other words, the platform is now over 50% larger than PlayStation, according to its officially reported 125 million MAU figure as of March 2026.

Why it matters: Steam is attracting a lot of new gamers who are migrating from consoles, as those ecosystems continue to falter due to controversial choices. In comparison, Valve has continued to make smart and player-first decisions over the decades.

Steam reportedly had 198 million monthly active users by the second half of last year, likely surpassing 200 million this year.

This tidbit comes via Simon Carles’ GameDiscoverCo report, which uses two different estimates using soft math to reach Steam’s 200 million+ monthly active users.

The first approach takes into account Steam’s reported 31.1 million monthly active users in the European Union countries last year. Using the public bandwidth usage map, the adjusted share of EU countries amounted to 15.7%.

If this adjusted share equals 31.1 million users, then extrapolation would put Steam’s total global base at 198 million in H2 2025. It would naturally have climbed over 200 million MAU by 2026.

Meanwhile, the second method relies on Steam’s concurrent user growth.

The platform’s peak CCU rose from 25 million in 2021 to 40 million last year. By applying the same CCU-to-MAU growth ratio from 2021, the expanded CCU figure in 2025 roughly translates to 210 million monthly active users.

Another estimate shows Steam's monthly active users to be over 210 million.

To put this growth into perspective, Steam officially reported that it had 132 million monthly active users in 2021, so the platform has expanded at an insane pace in the last five years.

Do you think Steam will further grow as PlayStation and Xbox face backlash from gamers over multiple controversies? Do the consoles stand a chance at outpacing Valve’s store? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
