- PlayStation is being sued by 5 different countries for being anti-competitive and anti-consumer.
- They demand that the company return to physical media, as the decision isn’t good for consumers or retailers.
- Sony is unaffected so far and says that the decision hasn’t hurt their business at all.
Ever since Sony announced its shift to digital media, there has been a huge uproar. Fans even filed a petition to bring discs back, which garnered over 250K signatures; however, it seems that Sony has made its decision and is sticking to it.
A 400 million Euros lawsuit was recently filed against the company for abandoning physical media. And now, PlayStation in total is facing lawsuits from 5 different countries over anti-competitive practices that are hurting the market.
Why it matters: Despite digital sales being at an all-time high, fans argue there is still demand for physical media. Sony’s move away from them is very anti-consumer, and they are calling it out.

PlayStation is now facing lawsuits in 5 countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Portugal, and, most recently, Mexico. All have the same argument that the company is becoming highly non-competitive.
The argument is that since Sony is one of the leaders in the gaming industry, taking this big decision is bad for the whole industry. This will eliminate competition and take away the right of choice from the consumers as well.

The latest lawsuit filed in Mexico adds extra points, including that the second-hand market will be erased when physical media disappears. This will hurt both consumers and retailers, hurting the entire gaming market.
So, while Sony Entertainment appears to be in deep trouble, it still doesn’t have plans to change its decision. The CFO recently stated that the decision hasn’t hurt their business, and they will continue with it.
