- Sony says PlayStation remains more affordable than high-end PC gaming.
- Many argue that PlayStation has effectively become a PC adjacent, but Sony disagrees on the matter.
- The comment comes as fans continue to scrutinize the shift away from physical disc production.
Following Sony’s decision to exit the physical games market, many have argued in favor of the PC gaming ecosystem. Some fans are even boycotting the PS5, swearing to shift to the PC ecosystem for the next generation.
Amid growing uncertainty, Sony has discussed the things that make the PS5 stand out from PC.
Why it matters: PlayStation has recently decided to establish a distinct identity once again after promoting its games on PC for a while. However, it’s latest decision poses a threat to future hardware.

During Sony’s latest investor’s meeting, CFO Lin Tao discussed the distinctions between PC and consoles.
She argued that PlayStation’s ecosystem remains more affordable than high-end PC gaming, even with the shift away from disc drives, something that will eliminate the option of used game purchases.
The CFO also pointed out that the removal of PlayStation’s disc drive is not enough to blend the lines between consoles and PC. She ultimately feels both PC and console gaming can coexist peacefully moving forward.
Compared to high-end gaming PCs, our product is more affordable. We don’t feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate from the PC.

This response comes after fans threatened to shift to PC, claiming that the digital shift removes a key strength of PlayStation’s consoles. Of course, it remains to be seen whether these threats will lead to tangible changes in Sony’s business.
For the time being, PlayStation has seen no difference in console and game sales.
