- Nintendo believes consumers no longer judge new gaming hardware purely by technical performance.
- Shigeru Miyamoto says that gamers are more concerned about accessing games on the hardware they own.
- This is why the Nintendo Switch has been able to survive for nearly a full decade on the market.
As it continues to live and die by its age-old approach, Nintendo has once again made it clear that raw specifications are not the company’s main priority when developing new hardware.
According to the veteran game designer and Mario creator, the Japanese gaming giant believes players increasingly care about the experiences a platform can offer as opposed to raw hardware capabilities.
Why it matters: Nintendo’s approach helps explain why its consoles often trail rival hardware on paper but still attract large audiences through exclusive games and unique offerings.

In an interview with Famitsu via Resetera, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the company’s shift away from the hardware race.
He noted that the Nintendo Switch has now lasted for 9 years, crediting gamers’ shifting mentality for this success. As per the Mario creator, gamers no longer look for raw hardware performance alone in today’s era.
He believes that Nintendo’s advantage lies in offerings that are unique to the platform. This has always been the case, and that strategy was evident with the Wii’s motion controls, the Nintendo DS touchscreen, and the Switch’s hybrid console design.
I think that customers are no longer just look for specs. I think the ideal is that ‘if you buy the software, you can play it on the device you have at home.’
-Shigeru Miyamoto

In the same interview, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the importance of remakes and keeping legacy IPs fresh for players. Needless to say, the Nintendo veteran provided plenty of insight on various subjects.
Do you think Nintendo’s games-first strategy still works, or should the company compete more directly on hardware specifications?
