PlayStation Shuts Down Fan Made Last Of Us Multiplayer Mod

The Mod Was Being Funded By The Community Through Patreon.

Story Highlight
  • The development of The Last of Us multiplayer mod has been shut down.
  • The mod team received a cease-and-desist letter on behalf of Sony and Naughty Dog.
  • Funded by Patreon, the mod was supposed to launch this month and was showing incredible progress.

PlayStation’s horrid live-service strategy has arguably been the biggest thorn in its side ever since the PS5 generation started. The company has invested hundreds of millions in a dozen titles, half of which have ended up being cancelled, while the others have failed to attract a sizeable audience.

One of these canned games was The Last of Us online, which was thrown in the trash can after seven years of development. Now, Sony has even stopped the production of a fan-made multiplayer mod for the game, sending a cease-and-desist order.

Why it matters: Sony has failed to develop a multiplayer offering for The Last of Us in the last seven years. Hence, shutting down a fan-made and community-funded project is akin to shooting itself in the foot.

Production of the fan-made The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod has been shut down after the development team received a cease-and-desist letter from Sony. Funded through Patreon, the multiplayer mod was supposed to launch this month and has been in development since January by Speclizer.

The mod team even released extended footage of the multiplayer this Summer, showcasing interesting new features like perks, new maps, and many more that weren’t part of The Last of Us Part 2. The mod showcased incredible progress in a short amount of time, with 4v4 playable in the extended trailer.

However, according to Speclizer, the mod will never see the light of day now due to a request from Naughty Dog and Sony. The Japanese giant shutting down an unofficial mod like this isn’t something out of the ordinary. But considering how Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part 2 without an online component, fans were only trying to fill the gap the company had left.

Community Impact
The Last of Us online was canned by the company despite 7 years of development.

Sony also cancelled the standalone multiplayer game despite it being 80% complete after over hundreds of millions in investment. Hence, it won’t be wrong to say the mod team was giving the community something it has been craving for years.

Do you think Sony should have let the multiplayer mod release? Was the company wrong to cancel the standalone Last of Us online game? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
