AMD is reportedly making a new laptop gaming processor called the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D.
It uses the Zen 5 architecture with 8 cores, 16 threads, speeds up to 5.10 GHz, and 96 MB of cache.
All 8 cores connect to the full cache directly through a single chiplet design, similar to the desktop version.
AMD is reportedly preparing a new high-end gaming processor for laptops, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D; this information comes from the well-known leaker Golden Pig. According to the leaker, this model will feature 8 cores and 16 threads based on Zen 5, reach a Boost frequency of up to 5.10 GHz, and offer 96 MB of L3 cache thanks to AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology.
The chip is rumoured to debut at CES 2027 in early January. While AMD has yet to officially acknowledge its existence, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D might become one of the most interesting gaming laptop CPUs of 2027 if the rumoured specifications are correct.
The Ryzen 7 9800HX3D was previously known as the Ryzen 7 9755HX3D, but AMD reportedly renamed it to better line it with the desktop Ryzen 7 9800X3D. A single eight-core CCD will provide the 96MB of L3 cache with 32MB of conventional cache and an extra 64MB of vertically stacked 3D V-Cache. The configuration will be nearly similar to the desktop Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with the mobile model’s maximum clock speed decreased from 5.20 to 5.10 GHz.
Using a single CCD allows all eight cores to have direct access to the extended cache, eliminating the asymmetric distribution found in certain high-end X3D processors with two chiplets. The latest Ryzen 9 9955HX3D features 16 cores, 32 threads, a maximum clock speed of 5.40 GHz, and 128 MB of L3 cache.
All of this is coupled to a default TDP of 55W, with a customisable range of 55 to 75W. The Ryzen 7 9800HX3D should be positioned below this model; however, it may provide comparable gaming performance in circumstances where the GPU or cache is more important than the number of cores.
According to Golden Pig, AMD intends to commence mass production of the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D in the fourth quarter of 2026. This would allow some manufacturers to show off their first laptops with it before the end of the year. However, the general launch and arrival of a larger number of models are projected to take place around CES 2027.
However, the Ryzen 7 9800HX3D is a late arrival. According to a leaked roadmap, the Gator Range (Zen 6), an anticipated family of high-performance laptop CPUs, will be available in 2027. This means that in 2027, AMD will release its flagship CPU developed just for gaming, based on the Zen 5 architecture, while new devices with Zen 6 processors would be available in mid- to late 2027.
