- Bethesda has announced ongoing work on Fallout 5.
- The next mainline RPG is said to be in pre-production and will be the team’s main focus after The Elder Scrolls 6.
- Fallout 5 is being made using Creation Engine 3, but it likely won’t be out for several more years.
Despite its popularity, the Fallout franchise has yet to receive another new entry from Bethesda post-Fallout 76. With the team fully focused on supporting Fallout 76 and working on projects like Starfield, Fallout fans were left starving for a brand new entry.
However, out of the blue, Bethesda Game Studios has come forward with good news for the fans. As per the studio, Fallout 5 is now in pre-production.
Why it matters: The Fallout franchise stands alongside The Elder Scrolls as one of Bethesda’s most beloved IPs. It also serves as one of Xbox’s biggest first-party IPs following the acquisition of ZeniMax Media.

Bethesda Game Studios’ latest social media post details its plans for the future, mentioning multiple games the team is currently working on.
According to the studio, Fallout 5 is officially in the works now, and it remains a focus for the team, right next to its immediate priority, The Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda also confirms that the title is being developed using Creation Engine 3 to give it a next-gen look.
As per the team, this new iteration of the Creation Engine is more efficient than the engine has ever been, allowing the developers to juggle multiple big projects, Starfield post-launch updates, Fallout 76 support, and more at once.
Given the developer’s typical timeline, fans should expect the game to take several more years to reach the final stages of production. However, this announcement does show a sense of urgency that the team was perhaps lacking in the past.

Bethesda Game Studios appears to have accelerated plans for the Fallout series as part of Xbox’s renewed interest in focusing on the biggest IPs. Toward that end, Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters have also been officially revealed following the success of The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered.
