Xbox Dismisses Claim That PS5 Has 8x More GTA 6 Pre-Orders: “Wait For Real Data”

The Company Says It Has Gotten Record Pre-Orders So Far.

Story Highlight
  • An Xbox spokesperson has denied that GTA 6 is selling 8 times better on PlayStation.
  • The representative stated that the 8:1 split is false and that Xbox has seen record pre-orders.
  • The original data was reported based on affiliate website links.

Ever since pre-orders for GTA 6 opened up, the title has become the center of attention in the gaming world. From debates around the exclusive content in the ultimate edition to criticism for not including discs in physical copies, fans have a lot of opinions about the upcoming sequel.

Unsurprisingly, GTA 6 has also reignited the console wars, with PlayStation getting the upper hand on Xbox by striking an exclusive marketing deal with Rockstar. However, as previous reports claimed, the Japanese giant isn’t beating out Xbox in pre-order numbers by a huge margin.

Why it matters: Xbox Series consoles have lagged behind PS5 the entirety of this generation, but the selling power of GTA 6 might help Microsoft close this gap in the coming months.

GTA 6
GTA 6 pre-orders were reportedly doing much better on PS5.

According to Windows Central, an Xbox spokesperson has revealed that PlayStation isn’t outnumbering the company 8:1 in GTA 6 pre-orders. The representative said that this data isn’t true, and Xbox has seen a record number of pre-orders for the upcoming game.

“This doesn’t represent pre-order data. We’ve had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links.”

Originally, this news was reported by IGN, which got the 8:1 ratio from its own affiliated retail links instead of first-party sources. The Xbox spokesperson declared that fans should wait for the real numbers and not fall for such sources.

Retail links on websites don’t paint an accurate picture of sales data; instead acting as a reflection of consumer behavior. They aren’t a concrete portrayal of overall sales in the industry, only tracking clicks and user traffic via certain third-party links.

GTA 6
The game is already topping charts on Amazon.

Hence, the real split between the two platforms is still a mystery that only PlayStation and Xbox know about. Regardless, GTA 6 is off to a flying start in the commercial department, topping sales charts on Amazon and PS Store, with players also opting to buy the $100 ultimate edition of the title instead of the standard variant.
