After a series of misses, it’s fair to say that Ubisoft’s entire future rests on how well its upcoming Black Flag remake performs. The game has built a lot of hype so far, but there’s still notable criticism towards its low-quality cutscenes and lacking NPC facial animations.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft already appears to be hurting the game’s reception. A new leak revealed a planned DLC character pack that shows an out-of-place fantasy skin for Edward Kenway.
Why it matters: Gamers are criticizing Ubisoft for planning out-of-place fantasy skins. Black Flag Resynced is supposed to be a faithful remake, so these character packs detract from the realistic feel.
The leak by notable Ubisoft insider @intercelluar has drawn criticism since Black Flag Resynced is supposed to be a faithful incarnation, unlike the modern AC RPGs that went more of a fantasy route.
The skin reveals Edward wearing a burning lava-like armor and a living magma body while he’s holding burning weapons. The background shows multiple blazing ships with a volcano exploding in the sky.
The insider previously leaked logos for Rayman Legends Retold and the Rayman Origins Enhanced Edition, so the character pack also appears to be legit.
Regardless, the online criticism has been overwhelming since gamers argue these planned fantasy skins have no place being in Black Flag Resynced.
Gamers would have preferred a more realistic character pack instead. Therefore, many are blaming Ubisoft for not learning from past experiences, just for making a quick buck.
In Ubisoft’s defense, more grounded character packs will also likely come out for Black Flag Resynced.
They’re usually just an optional purchase in AC games that can be ignored if the player prefers a more realistic look.
On a side note, the remake has also previously faced heat for removing the use of the hidden blade as a separate weapon in combat.
