- Former developers have come out to highlight the toxic work culture at Bungie.
- One employee stated that the studio was the most dysfunctional workplace in his career.
- Others said that the hierarchy forgot that people play games for fun, leading to Bungie’s downfall.
Despite making some of the most iconic IPs in gaming history, Bungie’s future has never been more at risk. With support for Destiny 2 officially winding down, the developer is set to face a massive round of layoffs that will affect 50% of the staff, according to reports.
To make matters worse, insiders state that Sony is blaming the company for the failure of its live-service strategy. With its current situation looking bleak, former Bungie developers have come out to reflect on where it all went wrong, while highlighting the studio’s toxic environment.
Why it matters: Bungie is a prominent example of how even the most talented developers in the industry can be sabotaged by an incompetent hierarchy.

While talking to Aftermath, developers who used to work at Bungie brought up the dysfunctional and toxic environment of the studio, saying that it forgot that people play games for fun.
Working at Bungie was the most toxic, dysfunctional experience of my professional life.
-Michael Zenke
Ex-narrative designer Michael Zenke, who left the company in 2017, said that working at the studio was the most toxic and dysfunctional time of his life, but the developers alongside him were some of the best in the world.
QA test lead Uriah Belletto was also disillusioned with Bungie, saying that at some point, people in charge of the studio forgot that consumers play their games for fun.
As sad as it is to say, it felt like at some point the people in charge forgot that people play games for fun.
-Uriah Belletto
According to Belletto, the hierarchy failed to understand that people would play Destiny to buy skins for their character and enjoy silly items.

All in all, these comments shared an opinion voiced by many former employees, that Bungie’s leadership and the strain it put on workers have led the studio to its current predicament. The developer was already close to shutting down in 2022, and it could still meet this fate if Marathon doesn’t turn out to be successful for Sony.
