- Infinity Ward has confirmed that COD: Modern Warfare 4 will not feature clowny and cartoony skins.
- The team is aiming for a more realistic and grounded experience like the early days of Black Ops 7.
- Therefore, there won’t be collaborations with celebrities and popular entertainment franchises.
Call of Duty was once a highly respected FPS franchise that relied on hearty story campaigns and realism for player appeal. However, the era of live service completely turned the IP around with unexpected collaborations that led to cartoony skins.
The COD team now understands that players are highly unsatisfied with that approach. Thus, it promises that its upcoming Modern Warfare 4 will not feature any ‘clowny’ cosmetics.
Instead, the developers are aiming for a more realistic and grounded experience like the old days.
Why it matters: While MW4 would miss out on massive revenue streams by dropping collaborations with celebrities and cartoon franchises, long-term player satisfaction and higher community retention could more than make up for those losses over time.

Several COD Twitter handles confirmed this tidbit, with the official account bluntly accepting the fan feedback on the issue. It clarifies that MW4 will stay true to the sub-franchise’s original formula, so there won’t be unrealistic skins at launch or in subsequent seasons.
Similarly, the COD community teams bring up several examples of past wild collaborations and add that they won’t make a return.
No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts.

However, the community is still concerned that Infinity Ward would eventually introduce over-the-top skins after the game’s successful launch, once it garners enough sales and player retention.
Something similar happened to Black Ops 7, albeit on a much smaller scale than the past releases, thanks to overwhelming criticism. On a side note, MW4 has already confirmed relying on generative AI for content.

Notable competition with Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders could push COD to stay true to its roots moving forward. The franchise is already being forced to move away from yearly releases to pursue quality, after all.
