Microsoft Might Also Push For A Reduced Focus On Annual Releases!

Story Highlight
  • A new report suggests that Xbox is considering launching two separate Call of Duty titles next year.
  • One of these titles is said to be a standalone Zombies-focused game, which would be a first for the series.
  • Moving forward, Microsoft also wants Activision to focus less on annual releases for the franchise.

Much has changed for Xbox over the last two years. Between its multiplatform strategy and Activision joining the company’s first-party portfolio, Xbox has evolved rapidly, and things could change further with the arrival of the new CEO, Asha Sharma.

Much of the company’s future strategy remains a mystery for now, but it is said that 2027 will mark the arrival of a brand new console from the company. A reliable leaker also suggests that a new standalone Zombies-focused Call of Duty title could arrive from Xbox.

Why it matters: Zombies has evolved to become an integral part of Call of Duty over the years, but the game mode has never been given the premium treatment like the campaign and multiplayer modes.

This information comes from Ghost of Hope, a leaker who states that Xbox initially wanted to launch Modern Warfare 4 alongside its next console. For context, Modern Warfare 4 is expected to be the series’ mainline release this year, and Microsoft was previously rumored to be preparing for a next-gen launch in 2026.

The leaker further notes that Xbox is now contemplating releasing two Call of Duty titles next year to coincide with the arrival of the next generation of its consoles. This approach for Call of Duty would mimic the simultaneous launch of Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered.

According to Ghost of Hope, the two titles in question would be based on standalone multiplayer and zombies experiences, with Treyarch leading the charge on the latter.

The idea of two two Call of Duty games launching with the next Xbox has been floating around.

The leaker further hints that Microsoft is not as interested in the yearly Call of Duty release cycle moving forward. Instead, the company might push for a greater focus on longevity for Call of Duty experiences through regular updates and support.
