Be Prepared To See AI Slop Return In Modern Warfare 4!

Story Highlight
  • Modern Warfare 4 has been officially revealed, and the game is receiving more positive reception than recent Call of Duty titles.
  • This first-person shooter is also confirmed to include generative AI content like its predecessor.
  • The Steam AI disclosure suggests Call of Duty’s latest entry will likely feature AI-generated artwork for Calling Cards and more.

To nobody’s surprise, Call of Duty returns this year with Modern Warfare 4. The series’ upcoming entry is significant since it marks the much-anticipated transition to current-gen hardware.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is also heading to the Nintendo Switch 2, and the sentiment around the title has been quite positive so far due to the latest news reveals from Infinity Ward. However, this excitement could be thwarted soon, as the game’s Steam page confirms the return of generative AI content.

Why it matters: Black Ops 7 was heavily criticized for relying on AI-generated art, and many dubbed the in-game assets “AI slop.”

Over on Steam, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 features the same AI-generated content disclosure as its predecessor.

The disclosure states that Infinity Ward and Activision are using generative AI tools to develop certain in-game assets, but no further details are provided beyond this statement.

Of course, fans familiar with Call of Duty might already know what to expect. Given the series’ history, Calling Cards and other artwork in the game are likely utilizing AI for this disclosure to show up on the Steam page.

Some fans will likely be disappointed that Call of Duty is yet again resorting to generative AI content despite immense backlash last year. However, Activision and its teams are far from the only ones in the industry to do so.

Reports suggest that almost every modern studio is using generative AI. The big question, then, is whether these AI-generated assets will stand out as they did in last year’s Black Ops 7.
