Analyst Says PlayStation Eliminating Physical Discs Makes Entry Into Console Gaming More Difficult

Sony's Decision May Be a Short-Sighted One!

Story Highlight
  • An analyst sees PlayStation’s shift away from discs as a response to high hardware costs.
  • The decision has led to concerns that losing cheaper used games and disc-sharing makes console entry harder for casual players.
  • The shift could push younger players further toward mobile and other free-to-play ecosystems.

PlayStation has finally acknowledged the backlash to moving on from game discs, even going as far as proposing an alternate with codes in a box.

However, many remain upset at the gaming giant for this move. A prominent analyst has also discussed this decision in detail, noting that PlayStation could lose out on players as a result of this change.

Why it matters: Sony’s metrics suggest all-digital is the future, but the gaming giant’s physical ecosystem was very important to budget-conscious gamers.

Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliot believes PlayStation reducing its reliance on physical games may help Sony bridge a difficult period of high hardware costs but could make the console market less inviting for casual players and younger audiences.

He argues that physical games still have plenty of value for new players, especially in an era where games are becoming more and more expensive. Discs can be purchased used, and this is great for those who are entering a console’s ecosystem.

If hardware prices remain high and games continue to launch at premium prices, removing physical options makes the overall ecosystem feel less accessible to the average gamer, especially at a time when buying a console can cost up to $1000 initially.

Killing physical media boards up one of the cheapest doorways into PlayStation. In a gen where consoles cost $700+ and games hit $80, kicking down the cheap ladder accelerates audience split.

In extreme cases, players could be pushed toward alternatives like mobile and cloud streaming, something that would probably not be in PlayStation’s best interests.

PlayStation Has Finally Responded

The analyst believes PlayStation’s decision was made under pressure to maximize profits at a time when hardware is becoming increasingly expensive. He thinks this decision is not the wisest in the long-term, even if the current economics practically mandate such a drastic move.
