Shift Up Is Too Deep Into AI Use At This Point!

Story Highlight
  • Shift Up is facing backlash over a new promotional video tied to Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.
  • Fans argue that the use of generative AI takes away from the artistic nature of the experience.
  • Like many other studios, Shift Up is going all in on generative AI use for the future.

Stellar Blade has remained a major talking point for Shift Up, especially after the announcement of the sequel, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. However, the conversation around Stellar Blade: Blood Rain has now shifted toward the studio’s marketing choices.

Shift Up has recently published a new promotional video for the title, and the team is receiving quite a bit of backlash for AI use.

Why it matters: Generative AI use continues to spark backlash among players, and Shift Up has fully embraced the technology after garnering a lot of praise for Stellar Blade. Previously, the game’s trailer was also accused of using generative AI.

Shift Up’s latest promotional video features Evie from Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. Titled “Wanna Be in Love,” this 3+ minute music video is a creation of Shift Up’s AI Labs division.

Unfortunately, responses on platforms like Twitter and YouTube have been far from pleasant. Many have expressed disappointment in Shift Up’s use of AI, stating that they now fully expect to see heavy AI use in the full Stellar Blade sequel itself.

Some have called out the video for lacking the artistic appeal that they enjoyed about the original title. Many have also called it embarrassing and disappointing.

This is incredibly disappointing to see as I was a huge fan of the first game.

Of course, this likely won’t dissuade Shift Up from continuing to use AI in future games. However, the backlash could lead to the team scaling back on how much the technology influences its upcoming titles.
