8 years after its release, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is experiencing a second wind, all thanks to the recent release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s novel of the same name.
Following a push from Ubisoft itself and some other players praising Ubisoft for its commendable work on recreating ancient Greece, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey saw huge traction, with nearly a quarter of a million players logging into the game across all platforms on 27th July.
Why it matters: Even though Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is criticized for straying away from the Assassin roots so far, there’s no denying that it’s one of the best recreations of ancient Greece in all of media.
Alinea Analytics published a comprehensive report on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s player count, which surged by 90% in July. On 17th July, when The Odyssey first released, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s player count sat at 122k players across all platforms.
That number has been pumped up to 233K as of 27th July.
Most of the player surge came from PlayStation and Xbox thanks to the RPG being available on PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass. Other than that, Steam only saw a minor bump in activity — a modest 26% increase in player count.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has a vastly different recreation of ancient Greece from The Odyssey, but they share the same thematic connection. Still, you’ll notice a lot of characters and locations from The Odyssey in the RPG.
In the Lost Tales of Greece DLC, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey parodies the story of The Odyssey, where you help Barnabas find his wife, and in the journey, Circe tells you to avoid the sirens and Cyclops. There are also references throughout the 100+ hour journey in the game that you’ll find references Homer’s work.
Still, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has a comprehensive recreation of ancient Greece that blends real-life history with some mythology. The game features various mythological creatures, Greek heroes, and real-life figures like Socrates, Pericles, and King Leonidas.
Other than that, Ubisoft also offers an educational experience in the game via Discovery Tour that removes most of the gameplay elements to turn the open world into an interactive museum experience.
