For nearly 15 years now, Rockstar hasn’t visited any of its IPs outside of GTA and Red Dead Redemption, which is really a shame, given the developer’s amazing catalog of games. One notable example is L.A. Noire, a detective thriller set in the 1940s that is the most distinct Rockstar project to date, since it puts players in the role of a cop investigating and climbing through the ranks of the LAPD.
Even though L.A. Noire wasn’t a big hit at launch, people came to recognize it for its storytelling and groundbreaking motion-capture technology. Fortunately, Rockstar may soon revisit the franchise, according to Take-Two’s boss.
Why it matters: Rockstar has become too massive for its own good, releasing one game with a gap of a decade at this point. As such, shifting to other projects would be a nice change in pace for them.
Speaking at iicon (via Game File), a conference for video games executives, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick touched on the publisher’s legacy IP and what it plans to do with them. When asked specifically about L.A. Noire, here’s what he had to say:
Broadly, we’re looking at doing something in the future with all of our intellectual property.
This more or less confirms Take-Two’s interest in exploring franchises beyond just GTA and Red Dead Redemption at this point. What Zelnick said isn’t limited to L.A. Noire; they plan to expand to revisit more games in the future.
Regarding L.A. Noire, he added:
There’s nothing to announce on L.A. Noire specifically, and if there were, it would be Rockstar announcing it, not me.
Just a couple of years ago, it was reported that the L.A. Noire creators were working on a spiritual successor with the title being named ‘Swoden House.’ The original L.A. Noire game was developed by Rockstar Games alongside Team Bondi, but the latter has been disbanded since.
Now, it’s unclear which studio will take the lead on the new L.A. Noire game, since Rockstar Games itself is unlikely to do so. Whatever the case may be, fans can keep their ears perked for legacy IP returns following GTA 6’s release.
