Surging Memory Demand Reportedly Delays PS6 as Late as 2029

Nintendo Is Also Contemplating Increasing Switch 2 Price Due To The Same Reason!

Story Highlight
  • Bloomberg reports that Sony is thinking of delaying the PS6 to 2028 or 2029.
  • Nintendo is also contemplating increasing Switch 2 prices.
  • Rumoredspecs for the PS6 imply that it certainly couldn’t be priced reasonably in the current hardware climate.

The current generation of consoles will see an even longer lifecycle than usual due to the artificial inflation caused by increased memory demand by AI companies. Taking this factor into account, Sony has apparently decided to delay its plan for the next-generation consoles.

From what it seems like, the PS6 could now be released as late as 2029, and on the flip side, Nintendo is also considering increasing prices for the Switch 2 handheld.

Why it matters: Delayed hardware could ruin plans for the entire industry, but the brighter side is that the current generation will get more time to span out as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles still feel relatively new.

As Bloomberg reports, people familiar with Sony Group Corp.’s plans state that the gaming giant has decided to push the next generation of PlayStation consoles by 2028 or 2029 at the latest.

Sony Group Corp. is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking.

Moreover, their sources at Nintendo also estimate a price hike for the Switch 2 consoles, which was pretty evident despite the company’s dire efforts to keep costs under control.

Fortunately, the current PS5 lineup will remain stable in terms of prices as Sony has also secured a sufficient memory stock to ensure a steady supply. This was necessary because console sales are expected to boom in Q4 2026, as GTA 6 launches as a timed console exclusive.

From what we currently know about the PS6, the console will feature around 30GB of GDDR7 memory, and in the current market, that doesn’t come cheap. Even with stable RAM prices, expect the PS6 to launch at a higher price than the standard $500 mark.

Xbox, however, seems intent on releasing the next-gen console before Sony. As per AMD, their current plans are to release the PC-console hybrid by 2027 at the earliest, considering that memory pricing doesn’t halt their plans.
