Next-Gen Xbox Console Expected To Be A PC-Console Hybrid

Story Highlight
  • AMD has officially confirmed that the next-gen Xbox will be released in 2027.
  • The hardware is expected to be a PC-console hybrid, featuring the best of both worlds.
  • A 2027 release could prove disastrous or a blessing for Microsoft, depending on hardware cost conditions at the time.

The Xbox Series X|S is officially closing on its final days as AMD finally narrows down the launch release date for Team Green’s next console release.

The next-gen Xbox is releasing in 2027, as per the AMD CEO, who revealed that the hardware will be powered by their semi-custom SoC.

Why it matters: This is potentially the shortest Xbox console lifecycle to date, but it was expected given recent sales performance for Series X|S units.

Xbox Hardware Sales Were Down By 32% In The Last Quarter

In the earnings call for AMD’s Q4 2025, CEO Dr. Lisa Su dropped the biggest teaser for Microsoft’s upcoming console plans.

Development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.

While one would expect Microsoft to completely abandon its first-party Xbox hardware plans, it’s still proceeding with them in collaboration with AMD.

Reportedly powered by the Magnus chip, this device will be a PC-hybrid console, aiming to close in on the gap between both models. As rumors go, the PC will be powered by the new Xbox UI, which is already available on Windows 11 systems and Xbox ROG Ally handhelds.

Still, 2027 is an unusual time for a console release, as component prices are through the roof, and controlling costs would be challenging for Microsoft, especially given the console’s high-end specs and higher price point compared to typical consoles.

Amid this situation, Sony has also decided to delay the PS6 and is extending the PS5 lifecycle, making the most of the current generation.

There is also the question of whether people will stick with Team Green for the next-gen console release, given recent moves that have led even long-term fans to abandon the platform.

Whatever AMD and Xbox have in store for fans, we hope to learn soon. Maybe 2027 will be the year AI-driven hardware inflation is controlled, giving Xbox an edge over PlayStation in the next-gen console release. In the worst case, it would be a total disaster for them if hardware prices don’t come down.
