- Bungie recently opened pre-orders for Marathon and confirmed a March 5 release date.
- Since then, the game has shot up to the top 10 Steam best-selling games in a single day.
- The extraction shooter is going toe-to-toe with many free-to-play titles, alleviating concerns of immediate failure at launch.
Bungie has recently announced a March release date for Marathon, and with this announcement, pre-orders for the game have also been opened. For context, Marathon is priced at $40, making it one of the more expensive live-service games in a market dominated by free-to-play titles.
Because of this price point and Bungie’s dwindling reputation in relation to Destiny 2 recently, many expected the game to underperform at launch. However, Marathon’s current position on the Steam best-sellers list suggests the game will do just fine.
Why it matters: Many were comparing Marathon to Concord only a few months ago, so the Steam best-sellers list has likely been a huge relief for Bungie.

Looking at the current best-sellers, Marathon is doing incredibly well. At the time of writing, the game has managed to make it to the top best-sellers list, competing with hit free-to-play titles like Where Winds Meet.
Excluding other free-to-play titles on the list, Marathon is the 5th best-selling Steam game at the moment. The extraction shooter’s current position suggests that its price point won’t be a problem.
It’s also being said that Bungie’s regional pricing is better than most other studios. Perhaps this has played a role in helping Marathon climb the charts over a month before its official release. As shown above, the game costs less than $30 in our region.
For those still on the fence about Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, it’s worth noting that an open playtest is set to take place ahead of the release. Depending on how that playtest goes, pre-orders could shoot up further or see a dramatic decline.
Nonetheless, the game seems set to join the list of already successful Bungie releases for now. Have you pre-ordered the extraction shooter? Let us know in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
