Santa Monica’s New IP Is PlayStation’s Next ‘Big Thing’, Says Reliable Insider

Has Been In Development For Almost 7 Years Now!

Story Highlight
  • Santa Monica is working on a brand-new IP for the first time in over 2 decades.
  • Jason Schreier says that the game’s development is progressing well, and it could be PlayStation’s next big thing.
  • A potential reveal could happen at the upcoming rumoured PlayStation Showcase.

Update: After updating progress on Santa Monica’s next project, Jason Schreier further clarified that the project isn’t a new IP, implying that Cory Barlog may be working on a new Kinetica title, a God of War game or even a third-party IP.

The original story follows..

With the God of War franchise ending its Norse setting, its next venture is unknown for now. Meanwhile, rumours suggest a spin-off game is in development as Santa Monica Studio works on the next chapter.

That is, the studio is now expanding its wings to other genres, too. For the first time in over two decades, reports suggest that Santa Monica Studio is working on a brand new IP.

Details on the project are unknown except for its existence, but now a renowned journalist has come forward to state that this new Sci-Fi IP will be PlayStation’s next ‘big thing’, hinting at a great future.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s first-party slate has been dry recently. Santa Monica Studio is arguably the best and most experienced studio under PlayStation, and their new project would undoubtedly do wonders for PlayStation’s first-party catalogue.

In a thread on ResetEra discussing PlayStation Studios, Jason Schreier, one of the most well-known and credible journalists in the industry, was asked about Santa Monica’s new IP. Jason replied that the game was progressing well since the last time he spoke to sources, which was a couple of months ago.

The project will be led by Cory Barlog, the director of 2018’s God of War. His involvement with this new project is potentially also why he didn’t return for God of War Ragnarok.
