Cyberpunk 2 Isn’t Expected Until After 2029, Based On CDPR’s 4–5 Year Development Cycle

The Sequel Just Recently Entered Pre-Production!

Story Highlight
  • CDPR was asked if Witcher 4’s development cycle is a good indicator of when Cyberpunk 2 is expected.
  • According to them, each title takes around 4-5 years to develop from their pre-production phase.
  • As such, Cyberpunk 2 is expected to release between 2029 and 2030.

Project Orion has finally entered pre-production, and we may already have the official title for the sequel, as CDPR is now referring to the project as simply Cyberpunk 2.

The studio currently has its hands full with Witcher 4, and Cyberpunk 2 isn’t coming out anytime soon. However, as per the development cycle from pre-production to final release, Cyberpunk 2 isn’t expected until after 2029.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 has had the biggest redemption arc in gaming history, solidifying its status as one of the greatest RPGs. A sequel is highly anticipated, and fans will now have an idea of when to expect the next entry.

In their latest investor call, CDPR was asked whether Witcher 4’s development cycle from pre-production in 2022 to its scheduled release in 2027 was a good indicator of when to expect Cyberpunk 2’s release.

The studio’s Co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, replied with the following statement:

Our journey from the pre-production to the final release date takes four to five years on average

Cyberpunk 2 officially entered pre-production just recently, which implies that the title is expected to be released during 2029-2030 based on CDPR’s 4-5 years of development cycle

However, the CEO did add that each project is unique and has variables to consider, so the final outcome cannot be decided.

3 Witcher Projects Are Underway, Including A Fourth Entry, A Remake, And A Spin-off Multiplayer

From the scarce details we know, Cyberpunk 2 will be on an even bigger scale than the first title. Job listings suggest it will feature the most realistic NPC crowds to date. Moreover, multiplayer will be added to the project, including a brand new city of Chicago, with Night City possibly returning.

Even with all these features, 4-5 years of development for Cyberpunk 2 seems reasonable enough. Moreover, the studio has also changed the development procedure for its games after the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Therefore, the sequel will launch in a much better state, as the developers themselves have promised.
