Expect Major Layoffs At Bungie Due To Marathon!

Story Highlight
  • Marathon’s situation seems bleak after back-to-back controversies and criticisms.
  • An insider expects the title to be a massive blow to Bungie following low morale and other internal reports.
  • He suggests that the fallout will also impact Destiny 2.

PlayStation’s Marathon appeared to be a surefire hit when Bungie initially announced the title, but recent events have all but killed the excitement for this extraction shooter.

Following poor player impressions and allegations of plagiarism, Marathon is expected to be delayed to 2026. The insider who initially reported on the team’s current situation also believes this release will permanently hurt Bungie as a studio.

Why it matters: Although Bungie is one of gaming’s most renowned studios, the team has not had much success over the last few years.

Bungie Marathon Game
Marathon Is Unlikely To Live Up To Halo And Destiny’s Reputation

As per Forbes journalist Paul Tassi, Marathon’s situation seems hopeless at this point. The insider has plenty of information about Bungie’s current situation, making this statement quite interesting.

He argues that the game likely won’t suffer the same fate as Concord, but it will be a huge blow to Bungie overall. According to Paul Tassi, the studio will suffer from layoffs and even see Destiny 2 performing worse as a result of the worsening reputation.

The insider also expects Sony leadership to take over Bungie fully once all is said and done, leaving the once legendary studio with a tarnished reputation.

This will hurt Bungie and its actual healthy child, Destiny. There will be layoffs.

Perhaps the saddest part about this situation is that Bungie has already had multiple layoffs over the last few years. Destiny 2 player counts have also suffered despite the consistent output of new content.

PlayStation Purchased Bungie For Its Live-Service Expertise

The insider says that there is simply no saving Marathon at this point due to a combination of factors. Whether it be the low player counts during the Alpha test or the slew of recent controversies around the title, nothing about the current situation suggests a comeback is possible.

Ultimately, a delay is the only option, but Bungie’s fate now appears to be set in stone.
