"Sony Has To Rethink Its Strategy If It Wants To Stay Relevant."

Story Highlight
  • Sony’s former President has stated that PlayStation needs to reconsider its emphasis on graphics.
  • Shuhei Yoshida thinks the company needs to rethink its strategy to appeal to a broader audience.
  • The former Sony boss previously said that graphics have plateaued.

For the past few years, the gaming world has been plagued with the serious issue of ballooning budgets for AAA titles. Games like Skull & Bones and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have acquired development budgets similar to those of Hollywood blockbusters.

According to developers, cutting-edge graphics are a big reason for this highly unsustainable practice, as they significantly increase the development time of AAA titles. Now, Shuhei Yoshida has criticised the company’s approach to graphics, saying there are other things to focus on.

Why it matters: An ex-Sony boss echoing what many others think about game graphical quality is a good sign.

PlayStation has pioneered cutting-edge graphics with titles like God of War Ragnarok.

In a new interview, the Sony ex-president said that the company must reconsider its emphasis on cutting-edge graphics to stay relevant. Shuhei Yoshida admitted that it has been a part of PlayStation DNA for some time now, and the users also expect such graphics from their games.

However, if PlayStation wants to continue being popular with the broader player base, it needs to change its approach and reconsider its focus on cutting-edge graphics. Yoshida did state that providing the best graphical quality to the players who want it is necessary, but it isn’t how one stays relevant in the industry.

in order to continue to be popular with users in a broad sense, we have to change our way of thinking.

Basically, the ex-president of Sony is amplifying the opinion of a large majority of gamers who want studios to focus more on story-telling. Many developers also think such graphical quality isn’t feasible consistently and will lead to extended development times.

Despite this, however, studios like Capcom are still chasing an edge in graphical quality. CD Projekt Red is another developer looking for photorealistic graphics for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. Considering how many think graphics have plateaued, it will be interesting to see what edge these games have.
