Dominated PC-based Handheld Gaming Market!

Story Highlight
  • Valve’s Steam Deck is estimated to have sold 4 million units since its release in 2022.
  • PC handhelds have sold nearly 6 million units in total over the past three years.
  • Combined sales of 2 million units across the market are expected again this year, which may push Valve’s hardware sales to 5 million.

The Steam Deck has often earned the title of the best modern handheld due to its balanced hardware and Valve’s software support. Now sporting an OLED screen, Valve’s handheld is better than ever and continues to impress.

Sales estimates also show impressive results, putting the hardware at nearly 4 million units sold.

Why it matters: The portable hardware launched three years ago, introducing a brand new concept to the industry. Needless to say, Valve has succeeded with its debut portable gaming machine.

While these figures might seem inconsequential compared to Nintendo’s nearly 150 million Switch sales, PC handhelds have never been in a better position.

Data from analysts suggests that around 6 million handhelds will be sold across the market between 2022 and 2024. These 6 million units were spread across the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, MSI Claw, and Lenovo Legion Go.

To nobody’s surprise, the Steam Deck accounted for the lion’s share of the 6 million figure. Moreover, analysts believe all four handhelds will sell another 2 million units by the end of 2025.

It should be noted that other hardware, including Chinese handhelds, were not included in these figures. In the grand scheme of things, however, Valve’s sales figures remain impressive, especially considering the company’s focus on software.

The Steam Deck ultimately brings more people into the Steam ecosystem, so the 4 million number is by no means small.

Valve has also discussed the Steam Deck 2 on multiple occasions. The company intends to deliver a major leap next generation, so the original hardware will likely stay on the market for an additional year or two.
