Sony Spending Over $250 Million on Days Gone Dev’s Live-Service Game

$250 Million For Live Service But Not Days Gone 2!

Story Highlights
  • Sony has reportedly invested a huge sum of over $250 million in Bend Studio’s next game.
  • The new project won’t be a Days Gone sequel, as Sony wasn’t much of a ‘fan’ of the IP.
  • The recent Sony business presentation lists Bend Studio as an evolving/multi-genre studio.

Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone, is currently working on a brand new title. While it isn’t a sequel to 2019’s Days Gone, Sony is splashing big money on the project, offering millions for the budget.

It is claimed that the gaming giant has invested over $250 million in the project.

Why it matters: Bend Studio has been quiet since Days Gone was released. However, fans will be glad to know that Sony still supports and aids the studio.

Days Gone Well Recieved
There’s no hope for a Days Gone sequel.

There are no clear details on what exactly the game will be. While the project is said to be another one of PlayStation’s live service titles built using Unreal Engine 5, Sony’s latest business presentation lists Bend as an ‘Evolving/Multi-genre’ developer.

According to former Days Gone director Jeff Ross, Sony has already spent over $250 million on the project. He also stated that Sony didn’t want to invest in Days Gone 2, which would’ve cost a base of $150 million.

Whatever it is, they’ve spent at least a quarter of a billion dollars on it.

This budget makes Bend Studio’s next project more expensive than flagship titles like God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 2.

Sony Needs Days Gone
Days Gone reportedly sold a lot better than Death Stranding.

Since the game aims to break into the live-service market, PlayStation likely expects huge profits from the project. However, live-service games are usually hit or miss, making them big risks, especially with a budget this big.

Unfortunately, PlayStation was not kind enough to invest the same amount into a future Days Gone sequel. According to director Jeff Ross, the gaming giant is not a fan of the IP.

Reports state Days Gone made over $100 million in digital sales alone. Considering that most of Sony’s first-party sales are physical, we can safely say it generated plenty of revenue. The director also said it sold better than Death Stranding.
