PS4 Emulators Improving Steadily!

Story Highlights
  • Various teams are working on emulators for the PS4.
  • One of the biggest PS4 emulators, fpPS4, can now run 144 games on PC.
  • These games include smaller titles like Sonic Mania, Super Meat Boy, and more.

The PS4 is already over a decade old, and this last-generation console is home to highly regarded exclusive releases like Bloodborne, Infamous Second Son, and more.

Many of these are still missing from the PC platform, but emulators like RPCSX, developed by the team of RPCS3, have recently shown up. fpPS4 is another major PS4 emulator, and it can now run over 140 PS4 games on PC.

Why it matters: This is a massive achievement for the developers working on the emulators. At this rate, AAA titles might soon become playable through emulation, bringing the less popular PS4 exclusives to PC.

Recently, the team behind fpPS4 updated its compatibility list, confirming that the emulator can now run 144 games, marking a major milestone.

Out of the 144 games, 108 are classified as playable. The rest still have issues that need to be ironed out. However, considering that the emulator is making rapid progress, these results are impressive.

The playable games include smaller-scale titles like Sonic Mania and Super Meat Boy. The former also runs on RPCSX, making it a popular title for testing PS4-based emulators.

In October 2023, fpPS4 could only run 25 commercial titles. Therefore, within the span of a few months, the team has been able to multiply the list of supported games, leading to hopes for a promising future.

The emulator can also boot over 280 PS4 games. Although there is still much work to be done, more than 16% of the library of 1080 listed titles is bootable on fpPS4 already.

Bloodborne FromSoftware PS5 PS4

For the time being, fpPS4 is incapable of handling God of War, Bloodborne, or Spider-Man. This is not surprising, considering emulators like RPCS3 still struggle with various PS3 games.

However, with multiple teams now working on efforts to bring PS4 games to the PC platform, progress is expected at an increased pace. For example, the team behind RPCSX recently booted Bloodborne, showing a glimpse of what to expect.

We hope to see more updates from these teams soon. While PlayStation has already ported many of its best games to PC, the likes of Bloodborne, Gravity Rush, and Killzone Shadowfall have not received much attention.

This is where such projects could play a major role and bring these gems to a wider audience through emulations.
