Dev Expected To Hit Less Than 14K Wishlists!

Story Highlights
  • Manor Lords is one of the most anticipated titles on Steam.
  • With 2 million wishlists, this city builder is Steam’s second most wishlisted game.
  • The title has surpassed developer expectations and is set for a 26 April launch.

Manor Lords was first announced in 2020, and the game has since attracted millions of players.

Inspired by 14th-century medieval life, this city builder is set to launch later this year in April. Following the initial anticipation, the game has become Steam’s second-most wishlisted game, reaching over 2 million wishlists.

Why it matters: Competing against AAA titles can be extremely difficult for smaller developers. Despite creative ideas, many games fail to measure up to the biggest releases in the saturated market of PC gaming.

Manor Lords has been in the works for nearly four years. Created by sole developer Greg Styczen, this project has immediately impressed fans of city builders and those exploring the genre for the first time.

Speaking about the game, Greg Styczen recently reflected on his girlfriend’s statement from 2020. She expected Manor Lords to receive around 7,000 wishlists at most, though he had a more optimistic outlook, setting his sights on around 14,000 wishlists.

However, both were wildly off the mark and did not see this success coming. The developer said:

“I had no idea how the game would be received or if I’d be bad at marketing, but luckily I wasn’t discouraged and kept going.”

Manor Lords is only behind Hades 2 on Steam as the most anticipated title, but it has already beaten many massive releases like Stalker 2 and another famous city builder, Frostpunk 2.

Evidently, Styczeń never expected the game to garner so much interest. Two million people wishlisting Manor Lords was a major moment for the developer, and he hopes other developers will use this achievement as an example to pursue their passions.

Manor Lords

Leading up to its launch, Manor Lords has received a dream start. The developer needs to ensure this momentum is maintained till release, setting the stage for one of Steam’s biggest city builders in 2024.

We hope to see the game succeeding once it releases in April, inspiring other smaller developers to create their own passion projects. Like Manor Lords, the recently released Palworld has received immeasurable attention.

Despite coming from a small team, it has reached over 1 million concurrent players on Steam, breaking various records.
