Assassin’s Creed Japan Is Reportedly Ubisoft’s Biggest Investment Ever

Ubisoft Is Serious About Japanese Setting!

Story Highlights
  • Assassin’s Creed Red and Hexe have been dubbed the biggest-budget Ubisoft games ever.
  • The former will be released in 2024, and Ubisoft has called it the biggest blockbuster of the year.
  • Hexe, set in 16th-century Europe, currently has a 2026 release window.

Assassin’s Creed is one of the most renowned franchises in the gaming industry. Spanning about 13 mainline games, it has sold over 200 million copies, recently revisiting the franchise’s roots with Mirage.

For a new entry worthy of such an expansive series, Ubisoft has reportedly planned a major investment. According to JorRaptor, Assassin’s Creed Red and Hexe are gearing up to be massive as they are Ubisoft’s biggest investments to date.

Why it matters: Even at the time of the announcement, Ubisoft hyped the titles to be the best Assassin’s Creed experiences in years. Therefore, big budgets could translate to more dense games with ambitious goals.

Since the Japanese setting has been requested for so long, the developer appears to be treating it with a lot of care and respect.

Recently, games like Ghost of Tsushima have set a high bar for games based in Japan, raising expectations. While Ubisoft is late to venture into Japan, this decision could produce a better game.

The series has also been criticized for being a bit safe and formulaic as of late, so the studio might be pushing for a major evolution with its next two games, and the bigger investment would make sense in this scenario.

Assassin's Creed Codename HEXE

Assassin’s Creed Red will be set in feudal Japan with two protagonists: a male samurai and a female shenobi. Ubisoft believes the game will be 2024’s biggest blockbuster, further raising expectations.

However, Hexe might be the title that takes the industry by storm. We don’t know much about it, but it’s slated as the darkest Assassin’s Creed game ever, set during the Witch Hunts era in 16th-century Europe. This game should follow Codename Red after two years as the next major mainline title.

The big investments mean Ubisoft wants both of these titles to be its next flagships.

We hope to hear more about this year’s release soon since the Japanese setting has been a bit of a dream for many since the series’ inception. As for Hexe, we might have to wait a little longer since the game is still over two years away.
