Sony Reportedly Sold 40K PS5 Consoles Daily This Year

Almost 1.7K PS5s Sold Every Hour!

Story Highlights
  • The PS5 was released in 2020 and has sold over 46.6 million units.
  • A report estimates that the console has been selling around 40K units each day.
  • If it maintains the same pace, the console might surpass the lifetime sales of the PS4.

Almost three decades ago, Sony released the original PlayStation console, ushering in a new age of console gaming. The giant then started dominating the industry, and after each release, its presence became more widely known.

The latest release from Sony is the PS5, which has already delivered some groundbreaking titles. Sony has also confirmed that the console has sold over 46 million units since its release.

A new report puts this achievement into perspective, highlighting that an average of 40,000 PS5s were sold every day this year.

Why it matters: Jim Ryan, the CEO of PlayStation, believes the console will sell at least 100 million units. Therefore, this report is encouraging for Sony’s goal.

According to the report, the gaming giant has sold 400K consoles every 10 days in 2023. This means, on average, around 1.7K consoles are being sold each hour.

It is important to note that this data is accurate till October. Sales are also expected to pick up during the holidays, with discounts and promotions encouraging more people to join the latest PlayStation platform.

The console’s library has now grown to over 2500 games in just three years. This, combined with the sudden boom in supply after years of shortages, has led to a massive sales boost.

While these sales are largely driven by the stock shortages of past years, games like Spider-Man 2 have become instant hits after joining the console’s library this year. 2023 has been exceptional for single-player games, and two major releases of the year are exclusive to the PS5.

Sony is moving forward with this strategy in 2024. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the most anticipated titles of 2024, and it will only be available on the PS5 for the first few months.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

While the PS4 has sold over 117 million units to date, the PS5 appears to be catching up quickly. There is no telling how far Sony’s latest console will go, but current results are certainly encouraging.

We believe the PS5 has the potential to beat its predecessor, but this depends on a consistent lineup of exclusive games and content.

Upcoming games like GTA 6 are expected to launch as console exclusives, skipping the PC platform. This could prove to be another major period of sales boom for the PS5 since millions are likely to rush toward this game in the coming years.
