First Xbox Series X Title To Come With 3 Discs!

Story Highlights
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is coming on 5 December.
  • This edition includes the base game and Phantom Liberty on discs, requiring three discs for Xbox Series X.
  • The PS5 version will only include a single disc because the expansion is included through a redeemable code.

Cyberpunk 2077 is doing better than ever in 2023. Following the game’s 2.0 update and the phenomenal Phantom Liberty expansion, the game is gearing up for another console release.

While CDPR is mostly focused on the game’s sequel now, the studio has confirmed Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series S|X. This edition includes all the content, shipping with 3 discs on Xbox Series X.

Why it matters: With more detailed assets and larger worlds, AAA game file sizes have grown exponentially in recent years. Therefore, it might be common to see games requiring multiple discs.

This edition of the game will be released on 5 December, offering one package for those who have yet to try Cyberpunk 2077.

While the studio did not share much detail initially, one developer has talked about the upcoming Ultimate Edition with IGN, confirming that the Xbox Series X version will come with 3 discs.

This makes it the first game on Xbox to ship with more than 2 discs. On the other hand, the PlayStation version comes with a single disc because the expansion is not included in the physical package.

The game’s PC version will arrive with a GOG code for both the base game and expansion. According to the developer, the decision to exclude Phantom Liberty from discs on PS5 was made because of:

“technical requirements specific to each platform.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Night City

This announcement has received mixed reactions. Advocates of physical media are upset that a physical edition is yet again bogged down by codes on PS5. However, having to deal with multiple discs on the Xbox Series X is not ideal either.

Ultimately, this decision reflects the way forward for the industry. Like everyone else, CDPR is likely to move toward a more digital future in the coming years.

This release is a big moment for Cyberpunk 2077. Back in 2020, CDPR wasted all the hype and anticipation, but the studio has turned things around this year. Therefore, the physical release serves as the final step for the game’s redemption arc.
