Red Dead Redemption Joins Top 3 Downloaded EU & US PS4 Games of August

Sold Well in August Despite Backlash!

Red Dead Redemption was released over a decade ago, but the game was recently launched on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch platforms. Prior to its release, it secured the top spot on PlayStation’s trending page, hinting at an impressive launch.

As expected, Red Dead Redemption became the best-selling title on the PS4 after release, and it appears to have outpaced many popular games last month. According to PlayStation, it was among the most downloaded PS4 games in multiple regions.

Why it matters: The announcement of the Red Dead Redemption port received a lot of backlash from the fans due to a steep asking price of $50 for a game that was originally released in 2010.

The PlayStation Blog has announced its most downloaded titles of August, and Rockstar Games’ decade-old title has secured a commendable position on the list in multiple regions.

Red Dead Redemption was the second most downloaded title in Europe last month, only behind Minecraft. In the US/Canada, it dropped to third place, while Minecraft maintained its top spot in this part of the world.

It should be noted the game was released on August 17. This meant it was available for less than half of August compared to most of the other games featured on this list. Therefore, this can be considered an impressive result.

As stated earlier, the initial announcement was poorly received. Rockstar Games’ reveal trailer was flooded with dislikes after fans were disappointed with the lack of meaningful upgrades for the game.

Despite a safe re-release, Red Dead Redemption appears to be another great release for Take-Two.

In the past, the publisher had claimed that remasters were not worth the investment, but the latest release shows that Take-Two is changing its approach. Therefore, more ports and remasters may show up from Take-Two’s existing catalog of classic games.

Apart from the recent re-release, Take-Two appears to have several other plans for the IP. During an interview, Strauss Zelnick claimed that Red Dead Redemption has enough appeal to last for many years, potentially hinting at a third game after GTA 6.
