The Nintendo Switch has had a great run since 2017, selling nearly 130 million units. However, the console is quickly approaching the end of its lifespan, with the gaming giant preparing for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Over the past weeks, leaks about the new Nintendo console have picked up the pace. These leaks include details like a late 2024 release window, 512 GB of storage, and more.
The latest report comes from Zippo, who claims that Nintendo aims to price the console at $399.
Why it matters: The price of a console is a significant part of its overall success on the market. Therefore, companies need to find the right price for the specifications of each generation.
The report states:
” $399. That’s the ‘golden number’ they have in mind.”
This price would put the Nintendo Switch 2 in competition with the PS5 Digital Edition and the upcoming Xbox Series S Carbon Black.
However, the Nintendo release is expected to be much weaker than both competitors due to its portable form factor. While this may be disappointing, Nintendo found itself in a similar situation last generation.
The Nintendo Switch was significantly weaker than the PS4 and Xbox One, but this did not stop it from outselling both systems. Despite the $399 price, the report claims Nintendo will skip OLED displays for the upcoming launch.
This may be due to the increasingly expensive costs of hardware. However, OLED displays have become common on various devices, so this may be disappointing for Nintendo fans used to the high-quality displays.
Nonetheless, using an LCD panel for the Nintendo Switch 2 would offer various hardware benefits, particularly in terms of costs. Since it is said that Nintendo is confident in NVIDIA, notably in the Tegra X2 (Parker) SoC, the SoC would be the main source of the issues involved in costs.
This chip is expected to deliver a significant step up over the Tegra X1 on the last console, but it remains to be seen if it can rival consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One from last generation.
