Report Hints At Delays For PlayStation First-Party Games

Last of Us Multiplayer Unlikely Before March 2024!

PlayStation continues to dominate the home console gaming market. Sony’s latest earnings report confirms a record-breaking Q1 for the PS5 lifespan, selling over 3.3 million units in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

However, the report may point to concerns for the short-term future of PlayStation’s first-party offerings. As stated in the report, PlayStation has changed the launch date of a portion of first-party games.

Why it matters: The gaming giant conducted its latest showcase in June, and the weak lineup of first-party games became a common criticism from fans and viewers. The report may explain why many of the company’s biggest studios were missing from the show.

Sony has highlighted its forecast for FY2023, which runs till March 2024. One of the negative changes to the recent forecast states:

“Impact of changes in the launch dates of a portion of first-party titles.”

This likely means that certain games from the gaming giant were unable to meet their initial goals of releasing before March 2024.

Currently, PlayStation has not announced too many first-party games that would fit in this timeframe. Still, this likely means that titles like The Last of Us Multiplayer will not be released before March 2024.

PlayStation may have also pushed back announcements for various first-party games. Studios like Sucker Punch Productions and Bend Studio have been busy with new projects for several years but were not featured at the recent showcase.

PlayStation announced various live-service games at the showcase. This included titles like Concord and Fairgame$. The former was announced with a 2024 release date, but the project may have been pushed back by a few months internally.

Nonetheless, PlayStation will likely use strong third-party partnerships to support the console in the meantime. Games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are expected to arrive as console exclusives in early 2024.
