Arkane Studios is best known for single-player titles, but Redfall resulted in a huge shift for the developer. With a live-service approach from the beginning, Arkane’s latest work was more focused on co-op gameplay.
Following its release, the game was poorly received and became the lowest-ranked game from Arkane Studios. However, just months prior, another console exclusive, Forspoken saw similar reception.
Forspoken launched as a console exclusive for the PS5 and became one of the worst-received games of 2023. However, when comparing both games, Forspoken has more concurrent players on Steam right now.
Why it matters: Redfall is a co-op-focused game with the goal to retain players for as long as possible, but Forspoken is a single-player title.
As seen above, Forspoken has 78 players on Steam at the time of writing. Over the last 24 hours, 151 Steam users have played the game. While these numbers are far from impressive, Redfall manages to fall behind.
Redfall tops out at 71 concurrent players, managing a lower daily peak of just 135 players.
It should be noted that Redfall is also available on Game Pass. As such, a large percentage of its remaining population is likely on Game Pass, but the Steam numbers do not bode well for Arkane’s latest release.
Multiplayer games like Redfall are generally expected to last much longer. However, Redfall’s poor gameplay and various problems have pushed away players who have tried the game.
Both games were reviewed poorly, but Forspoken also comes out ahead when comparing critical reception.
A recent report highlighted a few of the development hurdles that Arkane Studios faced before Redfall was released. According to the report, many developers at the studio were looking to reboot the game as a single-player title.
As such, it is not surprising that Redfall ended up being a disaster for Microsoft and Arkane Studios. Following Forspoken’s release, the developer, Luminous Productions was also merged into Square Enix.
