God of War Ragnarok Costed Around $200 Million To Make

Almost 5x the Amount of God of War 3!

God of War Ragnarok is the latest success for the classic PlayStation franchise. The game was released on November 9, 2022, and in just the first week, it sold over 5.1 million copies. Moreover, God of War Ragnarok saw 51% higher sales than the last title in UK.

God of War Ragnarok has been a massive success for Sony, winning the PlayStation blog’s Game of the Year Award. While it is not too surprising for a God of War game to be a success, Ragnarok managed to exceed expectations set by previous titles.

With that said, some fans have wondered how much this title cost to make. In a report by Guardian, it has been revealed that God of War Ragnarok cost approximately $200 million to make.

God of War Ragnarok

This information came from Shuhei Yoshida, who talked about the gaming industry. In the interview, questions related to God of War Ragnarok were also raised, and it was reported that the game cost $200 million to be developed.

It has been made clear that the development costs for such games have skyrocketed. God of War Ragnarok cost almost 5X the amount of God of War 3, which was a really expensive game of that time.

The 5x increase is an incredible price uplift, but given the title’s success, it seems to have been worth it.

However, not every title is guaranteed to be an absolute success, as Shuhei Yoshida also passed some comments on this topic. He said:

“Getting games funded is tough, but even when you make an amazing game, there are so many out there in the market, great games that nobody knows.”

The budget for Sony games will likely increase even more in the coming years as development costs continue to rise. Recently, a Cybperunk developer also claimed that AAA RPG games are becoming unsustainable.

Do you think God of War Ragnarok’s $200 million budget was justified? Were you surprised by this figure? Let’s discuss this in the comments below.
